Every time the word “fandom” is used, somewhere on the Internet, a cat dies.

I don’t understand this sentiment in the least. Is there another word that describes a fandom like “fandom” does? “Community”? But that’s too broad. “Cult”? Has too many negative associations.

But fandom? “Chicago Cubs fandom can be really painful sometimes, let me tell you.” There’s no other word that I’m aware of that can do the work “fandom” is doing in that sentence.
